Resurrecting The Drowned BBS
The Drowned BBS is exactly what it sounds like: an old bulletin board system for 1337 greybeards who never quite forgave the web for winning. ANSI art, message bases, door games, the works. If you remember waiting for a 14.4k modem to negotiate, this one's for you.
The trick to running a BBS in 2026 is that nobody dials in anymore, so I front the whole thing with a telnet-to-websocket bridge and let people connect from a browser terminal. The board itself doesn't know the difference — it just sees a TTY.
socat TCP-LISTEN:2323,reuseaddr,fork EXEC:/opt/bbs/login,pty
Everything runs as an unprivileged user in its own namespace, because a 30-year-old codebase parsing untrusted input is a security talk waiting to happen. Greybeards welcome. Bring your own ANSI.
